
In 1963 a man in central Turkey took a sledgehammer to his own basement wall during a renovation and felt cold air coming out of the hole. The passage behind the plaster dropped eighty-five metres into volcanic rock and connected to a city that could hide an entire town, livestock included.

What is actually down there
The complex runs to a claimed eighteen levels, of which roughly the top eight can be walked. Inside are stables near the surface where animals would not have to be led far, wine and oil presses, storage rooms, refectories, a barrel-vaulted hall usually described as a school, and a cruciform church on the deepest accessible level. Hundreds of separate entrances open from houses in the town above, which means the surface village and the buried one were a single settlement with two floors.
The doors
The circular stone doors are the detail that convinces people something extraordinary is going on, and they deserve the attention. Each is a disc between one and one and a half metres across, weighing several hundred kilograms, seated in a carved channel so it can be rolled across a corridor. Critically, they can only be moved from the inside. Each has a hole through the centre, most plausibly to see or strike through, or to take a lever. They are not a mystery so much as a very good piece of defensive design by people who expected to be besieged.
The air
Deep occupation is impossible without ventilation, and this is where the engineering is most impressive. More than fifty vertical shafts run from the lowest levels to the surface, one of them doubling as a water well more than fifty metres deep. The shafts exploit the temperature difference between the cool interior and the outside air to drive a slow but continuous exchange, which is why the lowest galleries remain breathable rather than lethal.
Why the rock made it possible
Cappadocia sits under thick sheets of ignimbrite, compacted volcanic ash erupted by Erciyes, Hasan and Melendiz over millions of years. Freshly exposed, it is soft enough to work with iron or even bronze tools and can be shaped with a pick at a rate that makes a project like this plausible for a village rather than an empire. Exposed to air, its surface hardens, so the tunnels hold their shape without shoring. The same material produces the fairy chimneys above ground and the rock-cut churches at Goreme.
Who built it, honestly
Popular accounts assign the first excavation to the Phrygians or the Hittites, sometimes to the eighth century BC or earlier. That is possible and it is not demonstrated. The difficulty is structural: quarrying rock leaves no stratigraphy, no occupation layers, no rubbish middens in sequence, and very little datable organic material. What can be dated confidently belongs to the Byzantine period, roughly the fifth to the tenth centuries AD, when Cappadocian Christians expanded and reused the tunnels during Arab raids. The chapels, crosses and cruciform plans are theirs.
Later phases saw use during Mongol incursions and Ottoman-era instability, and Cappadocian Greeks were still sheltering in these systems into the early twentieth century, ending with the population exchange of 1923. So the honest answer is layered: an early core of uncertain date, a very large Byzantine expansion, and continuous reuse for well over a thousand years.

The capacity question
Estimates of how many people Derinkuyu could hold range from three thousand to twenty thousand, and the wide spread should be a warning. Nobody has published a rigorous volumetric study that accounts for the space consumed by animals, fodder, water and grain over a siege lasting weeks. The upper figures circulate because they are dramatic. The lower ones are more defensible, and either way the achievement is the same: a community that could vanish underground with its food supply and wait.
What is genuinely remarkable
Not aliens, and not a lost civilisation. Cappadocia sits on the road between empires and has been raided repeatedly for three thousand years, and it happens to be made of rock that a determined villager can carve. The rational response to that combination was to build a second town beneath the first, with doors that only lock from inside and shafts that keep the deepest rooms breathable. It is one of the largest pieces of purely defensive civil engineering anywhere, and it was built by farmers.
