
There is a story, repeated for thirty years, about Soviet military divers who met three-metre humanoids in silver suits beneath Lake Baikal and died trying to capture one. It has no documentation of any kind. Meanwhile, the actual floor of that lake holds frozen methane, bitumen mounds, sponge forests, a translucent fish that gives birth to live young a kilometre down, and a neutrino telescope the size of a small suburb.

Why Baikal is not really a lake
Functionally it behaves like a young ocean. Baikal sits in a continental rift where the crust is pulling apart, which is why it is so deep, why it is still getting deeper, and why it has lasted long enough to evolve its own biosphere. The rift is spreading by roughly the width of a fingernail each year, the basin is filled with kilometres of sediment on top of that, and earthquakes are routine.
Depth plus age is the combination that matters. Most deep lakes are geologically young, and most ancient lakes are shallow and have dried out repeatedly. Baikal has been continuously deep and continuously wet for tens of millions of years, which gave its inhabitants time to speciate into a fauna found nowhere else. More than a thousand endemic species have been described, and new invertebrates are still being named.
The animals that make no sense elsewhere
The lake has a seal. The Baikal seal is the only pinniped that lives its whole life in fresh water, more than a thousand kilometres from any ocean, and how its ancestors arrived is still argued over. There are hundreds of endemic amphipod species, some of them large, armoured and predatory in a way that shallow-water crustaceans are not. Freshwater sponges grow in green branching forests on the rocky slopes.
The strangest resident is the golomyanka, or oilfish. It is nearly transparent, has no scales and no swim bladder, is roughly a third body oil, tolerates enormous pressure changes, and bears live young rather than laying eggs. It is also, by mass, one of the most abundant fish in the lake. If you wanted an animal that looked like it came from somewhere else, this is it, and it evolved in place.

What crewed submersibles actually found
Baikal has been visited by deep submersibles, which reached the deepest basins and surveyed the floor directly. The results were geologically remarkable and biologically unglamorous. They confirmed methane venting, mud volcanoes and fields of gas hydrate, the ice-like solid that forms when methane is trapped in a water lattice under cold, high-pressure conditions. Baikal is the only lake in the world where this occurs, because it is the only lake deep and cold enough.
They also documented mounds of bitumen seeping from the floor, essentially natural asphalt, and a lake that remains oxygenated all the way down. That last point is genuinely unusual. Deep lakes normally go anoxic in their lower layers because nothing mixes them. Baikal has a deep-water renewal process that carries oxygen to the bottom, which is precisely why a complex fauna can live at a kilometre and a half.
The telescope in the water
The single most surprising thing about Baikal's depths is not natural. Strings of light sensors hang in the water column, anchored to the floor and deployed each winter through holes cut in the ice, because the frozen surface makes a free construction platform. When a neutrino passes through the lake and interacts, the charged particles it produces travel faster than light does in water and emit a faint blue cone of Cherenkov radiation. The sensors catch it, and the direction of the flash points back toward wherever in the universe the neutrino came from.
The lake is the detector. Its water is the transparent medium, its depth provides shielding from cosmic rays, and its ice provides the crane. It is one of the few places on Earth where a natural feature has been converted wholesale into a scientific instrument, and it now covers a volume measured in cubic kilometres.

Why the diver story keeps circulating
The account surfaced in Russian popular publications in the early 1990s, a period when a great deal of previously unpublishable material appeared at once and very little of it was checked. It carries the markers of an unverifiable story: no named witnesses, no unit designation, a casualty count with no matching records, and a claimed depth at which the equipment described would not function. It also arrived in the same wave of reporting as similar sightings attributed to other Soviet lakes, which is what you expect from a template rather than an event.
Baikal is also genuinely intimidating, which helps. It generates its own weather, produces sounds under the ice that carry for kilometres, freezes into transparent sheets you can see metres down through, and traps methane in bubble columns within the ice. It even produces enormous circular rings in the ice each spring, visible from orbit, which looked inexplicable until researchers linked them to warm-water eddies circulating beneath. Almost every eerie thing about the lake has turned out to have an explanation, and the explanations have generally been more interesting than the rumours.
The verdict
Nobody has found terrifying humanoids in Lake Baikal, and the story that says otherwise cannot be traced to a source. What is down there is a rift valley slowly tearing a continent apart, methane locked into ice at the bottom of fresh water, a seal a thousand kilometres from the sea, and a telescope built out of the lake itself. If you want something at the bottom of Baikal that sounds invented, the real inventory will do.
