
Everest has been summited thousands of times. K2, Annapurna and the rest of the great killers have all been stood on. Mount Kailash, 6,638 metres of extremely visible rock in western Tibet, has never had a confirmed ascent, and the reason has nothing to do with the climbing.

The genuinely remarkable part
Forget the pyramid theories for a moment. Kailash sits close to the hydrological hinge of southern Asia. The Indus rises to its north, the Sutlej to its west, the Karnali, a major Ganges tributary, to its south, and the Yarlung Tsangpo, which becomes the Brahmaputra, to its east. Four river systems that irrigate a substantial fraction of humanity begin within a short radius of one peak. Ancient traditions that describe it as the axis of the world were, in a very literal sense, describing a watershed.
Add the two lakes below it. Manasarovar is freshwater, round, and among the highest large freshwater bodies on Earth. Rakshastal, a few kilometres away, is saline and crescent-shaped. Sitting side by side, one holding life and one not, they gave the landscape a symbolic grammar long before anyone measured its salinity.
Why it has never been climbed
There is no technical mystery. Kailash is not especially high by Himalayan standards and its faces have been photographed in detail. The obstacle is that a successful ascent would be, for millions of people, an act of desecration. Chinese authorities have generally refused permits, and on the occasions when access has been discussed the objection has come from the pilgrims rather than the geology.
Reinhold Messner is reported to have been sounded out about a climb in the 1980s and to have declined on the grounds that some places should be left alone. In 2001 a Spanish team was reported to have obtained permission and then abandoned the attempt after international protest. Whatever the precise details, the outcome has been consistent for decades.
The kora
What people do instead is walk around it. The circuit, called a kora by Buddhists and a parikrama by Hindus, is roughly 52 kilometres and crosses the Drolma La pass at over 5,600 metres. Most pilgrims complete it in three days. Some Bon practitioners walk it anticlockwise. A small number perform the entire loop in full-body prostrations, which takes weeks. It is one of the largest voluntary undertakings of physical hardship anywhere on Earth, performed annually, at altitude, by ordinary people.

The claims worth separating out
Kailash attracts a particular kind of story: that it is an artificial pyramid, that compasses fail near it, that time runs differently on its slopes, that hair and nails grow at accelerated rates during the circuit. These circulate widely and none of them has a measurement behind it. What does exist is a well-documented physiological explanation for most of the reported effects: several days of heavy exertion between 4,500 and 5,600 metres, on limited food and sleep, reliably produces disorientation, altered time perception and exhaustion. That is altitude, and it is genuinely strange enough.
The geology is also less mysterious than the photographs suggest. Kailash is built from a thick sequence of conglomerate and sandstone laid down as the Indian and Eurasian plates collided, then uplifted and cut by weathering into the four-sided profile that reads so strongly as architecture. The vertical gully on the south face, the one that looks like a carved staircase, is erosion following a weakness in the rock.

- Magnetic or temporal anomalies.
- Accelerated ageing during the circuit.
What would be worth measuring
Nothing exotic. A published magnetometry traverse of the kora would end the compass claims permanently. Continuous glaciological monitoring would matter far more, because the ice fields feeding those four rivers are retreating and the downstream population is enormous. The most consequential mystery about Kailash is not what it is. It is how much water it will still be releasing in fifty years.

The verdict
Kailash does not need to be artificial to be extraordinary. A single mountain that four religions independently identified as the centre of the world, that releases the water for a large share of Asia, and that human beings have collectively agreed not to stand on, is already one of the most unusual places on the planet. The restraint is the story.
