The Ethiopian Canon: The Books the Rest of Christianity Lost

Illuminated Ge'ez manuscript page from an Ethiopian gospel book

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church uses the largest biblical canon in Christianity, and it contains books the rest of the Christian world simply lost. Two of them survive complete in no other language on earth. None of them is new, none of them was hidden, and none of them contradicts the resurrection. The real story is a preservation story, and it is remarkable enough on its own.

The short version

  • The broader Ethiopian canon is usually counted at eighty-one books, against sixty-six in Protestant Bibles and seventy-three in Catholic ones.
  • 1 Enoch and Jubilees survive in full only in Ge'ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian church.
  • These texts have been available to Western scholars since the late eighteenth century and translated into English since the 1820s.
  • The Ethiopian church affirms the resurrection. Nothing in its additional books denies it.

What is actually in the canon

Ethiopian Christianity dates to the fourth century, when the kingdom of Aksum adopted it, making it one of the earliest states anywhere to do so. It developed largely outside the Latin and Greek spheres, with its own liturgical language, its own manuscript tradition and its own decisions about which books belonged.

The result is a canon that keeps material the western churches gradually set aside. Alongside the familiar books it includes 1 Enoch, the Book of Jubilees, three books called Meqabyan, which despite the name have nothing in common with the Greek books of Maccabees, and several works of church order and covenant literature. Different lists count the total slightly differently because the Ethiopian tradition distinguishes a narrower and a broader canon, which is why the number eighty-one is conventional rather than absolute.

The two books that exist nowhere else

1 Enoch is the important one. It is a composite Jewish work from the centuries before the common era, describing heavenly journeys, the rebellion of a group of angelic Watchers, cosmology, calendars and judgement. It was known in antiquity, quoted by early Christian writers, and then dropped out of circulation in Europe so completely that for centuries it was assumed lost. Fragments in Greek and Aramaic have since turned up, most importantly among the Dead Sea Scrolls, but the only complete text in existence is the Ge'ez one that Ethiopian scribes kept copying.

The Book of Jubilees is in the same position: a retelling of Genesis and part of Exodus on a strict calendar scheme, preserved whole only in Ge'ez, with Hebrew fragments recovered from Qumran confirming its antiquity. Without the Ethiopian church, both books would be known to us only as scraps and quotations.

Why "new scripture" is the wrong description

Nothing here was recently discovered. A Scottish traveller brought Ge'ez manuscripts of Enoch back to Europe in the 1770s, an English translation appeared in the 1820s, and the text has been continuously studied, edited and argued about by biblical scholars ever since. It is standard material in any university course on Second Temple Judaism, and modern critical editions are readily available.

It is also not a secret from the New Testament. The short letter of Jude quotes a prophecy attributed to Enoch directly, which is one reason early Christian writers took the book seriously and one reason its disappearance from the western canon was so awkward. A book cited inside the New Testament is not a suppressed alternative to it.

What genuinely surprises people is the scale of what Ethiopian monasteries preserved. The Garima Gospels, held at a monastery in the Tigray highlands, have been radiocarbon dated to a range placing them among the earliest surviving illuminated Christian manuscripts anywhere, and they were produced and kept in an unbroken local tradition rather than recovered from a ruin.

What is genuinely true

  • The Ethiopian canon is the largest in Christianity and includes books others dropped.
  • Enoch and Jubilees survive complete only in Ge'ez.
  • The New Testament letter of Jude quotes Enoch.
  • Ethiopian monasteries hold some of the oldest illuminated gospel books in existence.

What is not true

  • That any of these texts is newly discovered or was concealed.
  • That the Ethiopian church rejects or revises the resurrection.
  • That these books were removed from other Bibles by a central decision.
  • That the Ethiopian Bible is the oldest complete Bible manuscript.

How canons actually diverge

The popular picture of a committee striking books out of the Bible does not match how this worked. Canons formed slowly, regionally and by usage. A book that was read aloud in worship, copied for churches and cited by teachers gradually became scripture in that community. A book that fell out of liturgical use faded, was copied less, and eventually survived only where it was still being read.

Language did most of the work. Enoch and Jubilees stopped being copied in Greek and Latin, so they vanished there. They kept being copied in Ge'ez, so they survived there. That is not a conspiracy, it is a manuscript transmission problem, and it is why the study of ancient texts depends so heavily on which communities kept reading what.

It is also why the Ethiopian tradition matters to scholars who do not share its beliefs. A living church that never stopped using a text is a better archive than any library, because the text was maintained by people who needed it to be accurate.

The verdict

There is no disturbing new scripture and no hidden revision of the resurrection. There is an ancient African church with the broadest canon in Christianity, holding in its liturgical language the only complete copies of two important Jewish works that everyone else mislaid, plus gospel books old enough to rank among the earliest illuminated manuscripts on the planet. That is the discovery, it has been public for two centuries, and it deserves better than being repackaged as a leak.
