Yonaguni: The Underwater Monument and What the Rock Actually Says

In 1986 a dive guide looking for hammerhead sharks off Japan's westernmost island swam over a flat wall with square corners and what looked like a staircase cut beside it. Nearly forty years later the argument about whether anyone built it has still not been settled to everyone's satisfaction, although the rock itself has a fairly clear opinion.

The short version

  • The Yonaguni Monument is real, roughly a hundred metres long, and sits in about twenty-five metres of water, not in the deep ocean.
  • Its right angles and terraces are genuine. So are identical formations in the same sandstone on dry land a short walk away.
  • Nothing has ever been recovered from it: no tools, no pottery, no accepted inscriptions.
  • The site would have been above water more than ten thousand years ago, which is the entire reason it matters.

What is down there

The formation lies off the southern coast of Yonaguni-jima in the Ryukyu chain, closer to Taiwan than to the Japanese mainland. It is a stepped mass of sandstone and mudstone about ninety to a hundred metres long and fifty wide, rising to within a few metres of the surface. Divers have named its features the way people always do: the terrace, the loop road, the twin megaliths, the turtle, the stadium.

It is worth being blunt about the depth, because the framing usually implies an abyss. This is recreational diving depth in strong current, not the bottom of the Pacific. That matters, because shallow water is exactly where wave energy carves rock most aggressively.

The case for a builder

The artificial interpretation was argued for decades by Masaaki Kimura, a marine geologist at the University of the Ryukyus, who dived the site many times and mapped it in detail. His case rested on the sharpness of the angles, features he read as post holes and drainage channels, a paved-looking surface, and the improbability of so many right angles occurring together by chance. He proposed dates ranging from a few thousand to around ten thousand years, the latter tied to the last time the site was dry.

The case for the rock

The geological reading, argued most publicly by Robert Schoch after diving the site in the late 1990s, is that the Yaeyama Group sandstone here is almost tailor-made to produce this result. The beds lie in near-horizontal layers, and the rock is cut by two dominant joint sets that meet at close to ninety degrees. When wave action and current strip material along a bedding plane and then along a joint, the result is a flat floor meeting a vertical wall in a clean corner. Repeat that at several levels and you get terraces and what look like steps.

The decisive detail is that everything remains attached. There are no separated blocks, no material transported and placed, and the bedding planes visible in the monument continue uninterrupted into the surrounding seafloor. Comparable stepped formations occur in the same rock on the island's coastline above water, where nobody suggests a lost civilisation was involved.

The tectonic setting

Yonaguni sits in one of the most seismically violent places on Earth. The Great Yaeyama tsunami of 1771 shifted enormous coral boulders inland, and the region generates large earthquakes regularly. A landscape repeatedly shaken and scoured produces dramatic fracture geometry as a matter of routine.

What is genuinely interesting

  • People were in the Ryukyus deep in the Pleistocene. Human remains from Okinawa and Ishigaki run back twenty thousand years and more.
  • Global sea level was more than a hundred metres lower at the last glacial maximum, so vast areas of habitable coast are now submerged.
  • The monument's surroundings have never been fully excavated.

What the site does not support

  • Cut and fitted masonry.
  • Any recovered artefact assemblage.
  • Readable carvings or writing.
  • A specific construction date.

The question worth keeping

Strip away the monument itself and a real problem remains. During the last glacial maximum the sea stood well over a hundred metres lower, and the continental shelves that are now underwater were among the most attractive places on the planet to live: flat, well watered, rich in shellfish. Then the ice melted and the shoreline moved inland, taking tens of thousands of square kilometres of prime coastal real estate with it.

Whatever those people built, most of it is under water and buried in sediment, and almost none of it has been looked for systematically. That is a serious gap in prehistory and it does not need a fake staircase to be interesting. Yonaguni is probably a very good example of what erosion can do to layered sandstone. The submerged coastlines around it are still largely unexplored, and that is the more useful place to point a camera.
